Internationally renowned baritone Benjamin Appl makes his Queensland debut alongside acclaimed pianist and artistic director of the Oxford Lieder Festival, Sholto Kynoch in this thrilling taste-test of Franz Schubert’s greatest Art Song hits, alongside some hidden gems.
Described as possessing an ‘unbearably moving’ artistry by The Times, Benjamin Appl is one of Art Song’s most in-demand and prolific classical baritones. Celebrated by audiences and critics alike, the former Gramophone Young Artist of the Year was a BBC New Generation Artist 2014-16, a Wigmore Hall Emerging Artist and ECHO Rising Star in 2015-16. An established recitalist, Appl has performed at the Ravinia, Rheingau, Schleswig Holstein, Edinburgh International, and Oxford Lieder festivals; Schubertiade Schwarzenberg and at the KlavierFestival Ruhr. He has performed at major concert venues including Carnegie Hall, Festspielhaus Baden- Baden, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Konzerthaus Berlin and Vienna, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and Musée de Louvre Paris and Wigmore Hall.
Esteemed English pianist Sholto Kynoch is a Song and chamber music specialist. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Oxford Lieder Festival, which won the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award in 2015, cited for its ‘breadth, depth and audacity’ of programming. In July 2018, Sholto was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Music in the RAM Honours. Recitals have taken him to Wigmore Hall, Heidelberger Frühling, the Zeist International Lied Festival, the LIFE Victoria festival, Palau de la Música in Barcelona, Opéra de Lille, Kings Place London, Piano Salon Christophori in Berlin and many other leading venues internationally. He has performed with singers including Louise Alder, Benjamin Appl, Sophie Daneman, Tara Erraught, Robert Holl, James Gilchrist, Dietrich Henschel, Katarina Karnéus, Wolfgang Holzmair, Jonathan Lemalu, Stephan Loges, Daniel Norman, Christoph Prégardien, Joan Rodgers, Kate Royal, Birgid Steinberger, Anna Stéphany and Mark Stone, amongst many others.
